Big Five

In Africa, the Big Five game animals are the African lion, African elephant, Buffalo, Leopard, and Rhinoceros.  The Big Five earned this ranking for being the most difficult and dangerous animals to hunt on foot.  The Big Five was adopted by tour operators as a indicator of the most sought-after game viewing.

The Ugly Five

Perhaps in jest, perhaps a reaction to not finding the Big Five, some have coined the phrase "the Ugly Five".  This pack comprises Hyena, Marabou stork, Vulture, Warthog and Wildebeest.

The Little Five

Visitors' appreciation and fascination with all creatures assures the "little five" pride of place too.  Look out - closely! - for the elephant shrew, black buffalo weavers, rhinoceros beetle, antlion and the leopard tortoise!

Feathered Five Six!

Not to be outdone or go unnoticed, the Birding fraternity have a short list of "must-see" feathered friends.  These are Kori Bustard, Martial Eagle, Lappetfaced Vulture, Pel’s Fishing Owl, Saddle-billed Stork and Southern Ground Hornbill.
